Lessons Learned from Our Most Challenging Projects

Iron Insights

As a web development and marketing firm, working on projects for clients daily is all part of the routine. While some collaborations can be more difficult than others, there’s a lot to learn from the accomplishments that may have required a bit of trial and error. Check out the knowledge our team has gained from their most challenging projects:

If at first you don’t succeed, try again.

Success is not about getting it right the first time, it is about being able to pick yourself back up after failing. Our mind and body are so adaptable… if we are willing to push their limits. A challenging project forces you to think beyond the obvious, utilize your resources efficiently, and narrow in on the goal of the project.  All behaviors required for everyday success, yet accentuated as the demands increase.

Be patient.

Even with a contract nothing is guaranteed. If you have patience and listen you can get the client more of what they really need versus what they think they need.

Ask questions.

Working on the White House website for President Barack Obama was incredibly challenging.  We were constantly caught between what the incoming president wanted on his website (hint: it was a lot of cool stuff!) and what was legally allowed by the EOP.  As the development team caught between these efforts, we were constantly challenged to find unique ways to work, meet the President’s wishes, and still fall within the bounds of acceptable digital policies.

A key lesson learned was to always ask WHY a certain request was being made. Once we uncovered that, we could almost always come up with acceptable solutions.

Bottom line: there is a solution for everything!

Review your work. Then review it again!

Always be organized and prepare in advance. Allocate yourself more time for the project in case any issues show up, and if they do you’ll still be on track to finish the project in a timely manner. Always always double check your work, you can even have a co-worker take a look at it to make sure everything looks great!

Show clients that you value them.

Be personable and don’t take criticism personally.

Everyone’s project is the most important thing to them… and as a digital strategist, it’s my job to show them that it’s also important to me. When a ball has been dropped or a series of events have caused a client to be unhappy, the next steps in the client relationship are crucial for the overall success of the project.

To learn is to grow.

I love to learn. That’s the best part of any challenge that I face. In the moment, it’s hard and you might struggle to accomplish the task, or maybe even fail at it. But all along the way, you learn and grow as a person.
