Today Google Adwords released their newest and most exciting feature – “AdBirds”. AdBirds takes your Adwords content to new heights by letting your message fly above all the rest on real life birds! Obtain never before seen visibility by choosing the exact messaging for your birds of choice. Just as with any other Adwords Google advertising, you will need to be mindful of character length for each section of the birds’ body. After all, these little creatures only have so much wing span… You can label the Beak, Head, Wings and Tail feathers of your bird of choice. I am still a bit unclear as to how they attach the messaging to the Adbirds, but I am assuming that it is via some sort of tagging device. Or, perhaps they go old school and tattoo your advertisement right on the Birds body? No, couldn’t be the latter, or PETA would have a fit.
I recommend first doing extensive keyword research using one of my favorite keyword research tools. This is important, because while some keywords may work on your standard text or display network ads, these keywords will need to be especially well chosen to get noticed in the sky.
Time is of the essence! You will want to get your AdBirds flying ASAP. Today, April 1st 2014 to be exact. If you do not start your AdBirds Campaign today, all of the Ad Birds may be used up.
Okay, so how do I set up a Successful AdBirds Campaign?
- First, you must have an existing AdWords account. If you do not already have an account with Adwords, you can create one here or you can contact us, and I will do it for you!
- Once you have your Ad Campaign basics in place and you complete your payment information, you will find a notifications icon in the top right corner (that looks like a little bell). Here is where Google AdWords will show you various alerts and other notifications about your campaign. Look for the notification that says, “Let your ads take flight with AdBirds”
- Click on the notifications link, and you are on your way to setting up your first AdBirds campaign! How exciting! First, choose the ad group that you want to include your new AdBirds on. Select your favorite type of bird, which will fly your ad across your targeted locations. Your options are: Sparrow AdBird, Owl AdBird, Duck AdBird, Eagle AdBird, Pigeon AdBird, or Penguin AdBird. You will want to do your research on these birds before you go spending your hard earned money on them for your advertising.
- Let’s think about this for a moment…. Which AdBird is right for you?
- Sparrow – small, quick, and efficient. The sparrow may be a good choice if you need to get a message out fast. So, if you have something that is timely, such as the exciting announcement of this new AdBirds feature in AdWords, you will want to use this zippy fellow.
- Owl – the owl is often only seen at night. For you nocturnal businesses out there, this could be your best bet. If you are marketing a night club or 24 hour eatery, have at it. Otherwise, don’t waste your time.
- Duck – the duck is available at most parks and community areas. The duck would be great for a family-friendly business such as a day care, government state park, and the like.
- Eagle – ‘Merica. Enough said. Always a good choice with broad audience reach. More pricey, but totally worth it.
- Pigeon – good reach within large cities with large crowds of people (especially near outdoor eateries). This would also be a good option for those who are more old school and unfamiliar with technology. Carrier pigeons were first used in 1436, so if your target audience is not typically a good fit for traditional AdWords, this may be a good option for you.
- Penguin – personally, I’m not sure why Google would want to highlight the penguin as a choice, considering the bad rap of the penguin name since Google’s algorithm change back in April of 2012. However, if your target audience live in this area, it may be a good option for your AdBird. Keep in mind the limited audience and the fact that penguins can not fly. They sure are cute though!
- Fill out the messaging for your AdBird. You will want your ads to be highly relevant to the landing zone, and consistent with your keyword research. This will help to increase your AdBird relevancy, so they will fly for you more often.
- Keep in mind the targeting of your ad. Make sure the bird is indigenous to your target locations!
- How much are you willing to bid per bird flight? This can be a bit risky considering the high death rate of birds in the U.S., so bid wisely. According to Stephen Messenger, of treehugger.com, 13.7 Million Birds Are Dying Every Day in the U.S. Read more here.
- Finally, let your AdBirds fly and shake your tail features for more business!
